With nearly 1.4 billion inhabitants, India is the world’s second most populous country and the world’s largest populous democracy.
Castes are strict social groups in which life style, employment, and social position are passed down through the generations. The caste system dates back to ancient times and has been altered by numerous governing elites throughout mediaeval, early modern, and contemporary India, particularly the Mughal Empire and the British Raj.
