History of Janmashtami:
The birth of Lord Krishna is an important event in Hindu mythology and is deeply connected to the life of Devaki and Vasudeva. Krishna was born at a time when Devaki’s brother demon king Kansa ruled Mathura. A prophecy had predicted that Devaki’s eighth child would lead to Kansa’s downfall. Fearing the prophecy, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and killed their first six children. However, a miracle happened when the seventh child from Devaki’s womb was transferred to the womb of Princess Rohini, who was Vasudeva’s second wife.
When the eighth child, Krishna, was born, the palace went into a deep sleep due to divine intervention. The prison doors magically opened and Vasudeva took Krishna to Nanda Baba and Yashoda’s home in Vrindavan. There, he replaced Krishna with their newborn daughter and returned with her. Kansa, on finding the girl, attempted to kill her, but she transformed into Goddess Durga and warned him of his impending doom. Krishna grew up in Vrindavan and eventually defeated Kansa, fulfilling the prophecy. This victory and Krishna’s life are celebrated every year as Janmashtami.
